Job Description

The role in brief:
You will be responsible for the design, delivery, and coordination of individual physical development programmes for junior academy players (U16-U18). Continually seek to drive innovation and support the development of a world-leading pathway/academy programme.

The Details:
• Based at our Training Ground: Surrey Sports Park, Guildford, GU2 7AD
• Reports to Academy Manager/Academy Head of Athletic Development
• Full-time permanent

The Responsibilities:
• Lead and deliver on all S&C provision to the junior academy (U16-18) for the Player Development Group (PDG).
• To plan and develop annual plans for key England Academy Players (EAP), over-see and individualise their programmes in collaboration with Academy manager and positional coaches to maximise their long-term athletic development.
• Ensure that players progressing from the U18’s into the full time Academy are prepared physically for the demands of professional rugby.
• Undertake regular testing of the said players to confirm the effectiveness of the programmes that have been implemented and monitor long term development.
• Manage all part time staff and volunteers within the junior academy – allocating work programmes and assessing their effectiveness across the season.
• Conduct regular school visits across our catchment area to all key PDG / EAP players to deliver relevant athletic development sessions.
• To programme and deliver rehabilitation sessions for all age group squads alongside the academy medical team.
• Provide education sessions to players/stakeholders on aspects of their wider lifestyle (sleep, recovery, social life etc), which will affect their physical development and progress within a professional rugby environment.

• Responsible for the design, delivery, and coordination of all PDG training camps.



• Attend Academy games & festivals. Leading the physical preparation for the game to include – warm up, hydration, pre/post-game nutrition and post-game recovery strategies.
• Manage and quality assure the level of S&C support to the DPP groups. Undertaking regular CPD for DPP staff and keeping them in line with the clubs overall S&C philosophy.
• Assist in S&C provision for the senior academy group as and when required.


The Experience and Qualifications needed:
• Degree level qualification in Strength & Conditioning, Sport Science or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 12 months experience working with youth athletes in an elite setting.
• UKSCA or equivalent accreditation or seen to be working towards.
• Organised, efficient and self-driven in all aspects of work.
• Enhanced DBS certificate.
• High level of IT skills, with the ability to analyse and present data to coaching & other performance services staff.
• Ability to work as part of a team and developing effective relationships.
• Must have a good understanding on the ability to demonstrate sound exercise technique to developing youth athletes.


Key Performance Indicators:
• EAP transition: monitor and manage physical data and training load to ensure players meet the demands of full-time environment.
• Academy athletic development pathway: Continually develop the physical development and educational curriculum and ensure relevant provisions are in place to maximise engagement and the athletic development of the players in our pathway.
• ACE school athletic development pathway: Further develop and refine the athletic development program at Gordons school in collaboration with their performance team.
