OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE POST

 

Reporting in to the Head of Healthcare, the role’s purpose is to lead on the development and delivery of a sport science service within the Healthcare Team at the Royal Ballet School. The Strength and Conditioning Coach & Physical Health Lead will work as part of a team that supports the physical, mental health and emotional wellbeing of students at both Upper School, Covent Garden and White Lodge, Richmond Park. This will involve leading best practice in strength & conditioning and providing appropriate levels of scientific support to drive both student development and performance outcomes.

 

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

 

Working alongside the rest of physical development team, planning, delivery and evaluating a programme of world-class S&C support to the student dancers of The Royal Ballet School. You will be a highly professional coach who has considerable experience of supporting young athletes, or dancers in a high-performance setting and will thrive on the challenge of this exciting position. This role will work closely with the Head of Healthcare and other healthcare Team Leads to ensure we aid the School mission of ‘setting the standard’. 

 

CONTRACT TERMS

 

Salary: £40,107.85 per annum

Hours: 40 hours per week; term time and INSET

Location: White Lodge, Richmond Park with regular travel to Upper School, Covent Garden

Annual Leave: All annual leave to be taken outside of term time and other scheduled Inset times

Line Managed by: Head of Healthcare

MAIN DUTIES

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH

Facilitate the day-to-day Strength and Conditioning training for the students at White Lodge
Lead and manage the strength and conditioning sessions for rehabilitation students at White Lodge
Design and implement the strength, conditioning programmes for students aged 11-16
Maintain accurate and up to date records of programmes in order to monitor student progress
Communicate this information to artistic and healthcare staff and if necessary, use student data in order to assess training programmes’ effectiveness
Manage the gym space, storage, and equipment, ensuring equipment is set-up and put away safely
Ensure that during S&C sessions, all students (and staff) are aware of the correct techniques and methods when it comes to strength and conditioning exercises
Keep up to date with best practice, knowledge and research in strength & conditioning in young dancers and for rehabilitation
Perform regular profiling tests to assess the skills and strengths/weaknesses of students, which can be used to individualise training programmes
Work with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure reduced injury risk and improved ballet performance/development
Supervise S&C intern student and manage their workload appropriately
Adhere to the school’s health & safety, and staff behaviour policies.

 

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT LEAD

To lead the delivery of best practice strength & conditioning coaching in both individual and group programmes and ensure this quality is maintained throughout the team
To lead on the education of sports science/strength & conditioning to students, the healthcare team and artistic staff as may be required. To work with the Training & Access Lead to disseminate best practice throughout the organisation and other key stakeholders
To lead on sports science support in the following areas;
Data analysis
Biomechanical assessments
Anthropometric assessments
Physiological and fitness assessments
Medical and physical screening
Predictive testing of size and shape/maturation measurement
Training load / periodisation
To lead the recruitment and management of the sports science intern students when required
To lead the streamlining or enhancing evidence-based protocols for return to train and return to perform process
To lead on streamlining physical development strategies/protocols throughout the School
Liaise daily with the medical department on student wellness and rehabilitation
To develop & assist in physical profiling and to maintain a database of this information
In collaboration with the healthcare team, to ensure best practice injury prevention methods are conducted
Work to develop a movement curriculum and Long-Term Athlete Development, with the other leads and Head of Healthcare, to ensure movement skills are developed in line with the students’ age and training age
Monitor recovery strategies and offer interventions when necessary
Monitor and interpret individual team/group training data whilst providing feedback to the Healthcare team and artistic team, when required
To lead on the use of training data to offer team/group training and strategies around periodisation, working closely with the relevant Artistic Managers
Partake and contribute to departmental in-service training, always focusing on best practice
To oversee and lead on smartabase data management with the Head of Healthcare and Healthcare leads
To support the Head of Healthcare with relevant research areas.

 

PERSON SPECIFIATION

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

BSc (or equivalent) qualification in Sports Science or Strength & Conditioning
Professional accreditation/qualification with the UKSCA (Inc. first aid qualified) or equivalent
Significant experience working with adolescents in an elite youth development environment and an extensive knowledge of growth and maturation
Experience of managing others
Excellent teamwork and communication skills, who can work independently and/or as part of a team
Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary sport science/healthcare support team
A high level of professionalism and integrity
Patient and willing to compromise
Approach problems with an open-mind and determination to find an appropriate solution
Dependable and punctual
Organised and resourceful
A high regard for health and safety
Effective in using data management systems and the general suite of Microsoft Office Programmes (Outlook, Word and Excel)

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Post-graduate Masters level in Sports Science
A strong appreciation for dance or ballet as an art form
Experience of working in a sport/dance rehabilitation setting
Experience in providing coaching support in dance
Experience with a data management system, such as Smartabase
Knowledge of other disciplines such as sport therapy, anthropometry, physiological testing/monitoring, biomechanical assessment, and the ability to relate to strength and conditioning practice
The ability to contribute to the team’s research profile
Experience of delivering LTAD programmes
Knowledge of adolescent growth and maturation and ability to understand how the affects growing dancers and athletes.
